Jurassic Jura, or the age of the dinosaurs

It was during this period of the Jurassic (end of the Jurassic) that certain dinosaurs left their tracks in the Jura soil…

These dinosaurs belong to two groups:

- The Theropods are bipedal carnivores. Certain species barely measured more than 30cm whereas others could measure almost ten metres. Their footprints are typically tridactyl.

- The Sauropods, herbivorous and quadruped, had a huge body carried by four solid legs in the shape of pillars. They had a long tail and a long neck ending in a proportionally miniscule head. The longest sauropods measured over thirty metres and could weigh several dozen tons. Amongst the most famous are the Diplodocus and the Brachiosaurus.

Since February 2002, near to Porrentruy in Switzerland, the construction of the A16 motorway (the Transjurane) has led to the discovery of numerous Sauropod and Theropod dinosaur tracks. In France, in the Jura department, the widening of a road in Coisia in 2004 and, in 2006, the floor of a quarry in Loulle have also revealed spectacular Sauropod dinosaur tracks.
